Our work at Housing Trust is focused on how we effect change on one of the most pressing challenges facing the greater Bay Area, the affordable housing crisis. Our mission is to solve this issue by using transformative housing finance and public and private partnerships to create more equitable and affordable communities. Together with our development partners, we're witnessing how our collective efforts do more than just provide housing, we are impacting lives for generations to come.
Whenever we have the opportunity to meet these neighbors and hear how their lives have changed since moving into stable, dignified homes, their story becomes our story.
There’s Lissa, a new resident in Sunnyvale. She used to live in her car with her three children before moving into their new two-bedroom apartment. For the first time, the family has space to call their own. “I know that there’s always light at the end of the tunnel, and the lights shine so bright over here.”
Neighbors like Lissa would still be living in their cars or on the streets if not for the work of our committed partners and investors.
There’s Michael, who purchased his first home with our Empower Homebuyers SCC down payment assistance program. He still remembers growing up in Section 8 housing and living on food stamps and is proud to be the first member of his family to graduate from college. Now, he is the first in his family to own a home. “It was my family’s dream to own a home – to get out of the cycle of poverty. This home helps me get out of the cycle and pass it down to future generations.”
Together with our resolute partners and investors, we have cumulatively invested $615 million in the community. This incredible effort has successfully created over 27,200 affordable housing opportunities, positively impacting the lives of more than 51,000 neighbors. Even more so, $8.1 billion has been leveraged by our partners.
I am deeply grateful to all the affordable housing champions who join us in advancing our mission, especially our partners, investors, developers, and public sector officials and their staffs. I am appreciative of our Board of Directors for their invaluable expertise and support. Thank you, also, to our Housing Trust staff, whose dedication to our work inspires me every day.
Helping our neighbors live in safe, affordable communities is close to my heart. As someone who experienced housing insecurity and benefited from the stabilizing impact of eventually having access to safe and affordable housing, I know first-hand how living in affordable housing can change the trajectory of someone’s life. Working in the affordable housing/community development field has been my life’s work for over 30 years. Every day, I feel privileged to collaborate with talented, committed colleagues and peers who share in our vision.
Solving the housing crisis is a challenge that we all need to tackle, so that our neighbors like Lissa and Michael can have a home from which they can realize their full potential. Together, we can create a Bay Area where everyone in our community can thrive. Your continued support and partnership are invaluable as we work towards this vision.

“We bought the house and got the house we wanted and needed for our family. It’s our very first home to build new memories.”
