Meet Colleen and Pinky! Colleen spent much of her career as a mental health crisis intake specialist but lost her job because of her abusive relationship. That led to her losing her home, which left her teenage son, elderly mother, and herself to all live in their compact car. Her son eventually was able to relocate. Colleen and her mother began living along the creek in San Jose, which was very hard on them both.
Eventually, an outreach worker connected them to a motel while they waited for a housing placement. Colleen’s mom fell ill and passed away at the age of 94. At the same time, Colleen lost two of her closest friends, one to COVID and the other to suicide. Colleen wants people to realize that many people are only one paycheck away from homelessness. We are so happy Colleen has made it home and is settling in with her beloved and adorable dog!
